New I-9 must be used starting Dec 26, 2007
As of December 26, 2007, all employers must use the new I-9 form
to verify employment eligibility for all new hires, or to re-verify
when required. Current employees do not need a new form
filled out. The new form has a revision date on the lower right
corner of the form. The revision date reads "(Rev. 06/05/07N." The
use of any previous edition of the form after December 26, 2007 will
subject the employer to penalties. The difference between the new
form and the old form is that five documents have been removed from
"List A." This is the list of documents that prove both identity and
work authorization. The documents that were removed can no longer be
used for I-9 purposes. A fillable version of the new I-9 can be
found on the CIS website.
Click here. Employers may now choose to enroll in the new
E-verify program. This program allows employers to verify the status
of new employees. It does not replace the I-9 requirements.
Employers interested in this program can enroll at the
CIS E-verify sign-up page. |
