ICE suspends reregistration under NSEERS
On December 2, 2003, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
published an interim rule suspending the re-registration
requirements under the National Security Entry-Exit Registration
System ("NSEERS").
Since early in 2002, male nonimmigrants from twenty-five
predominantly Muslim countries have been subject to special
registration requirements. The registration occurred either at a
port of entry or an ICE district office.
Under the previous NSEERS rules, everyone who was registered at a
port of entry had to report to a district office for further
procedures within 30 days, and everyone had to re-register on an
annual basis. Both of these re-registration requirements have now
been suspended. So if you have already registered, you do not need
to report a second time.
All other provisions of the NSEERS program remain in effect. In
particular, special registrants must still register their departure
at designated airports or ports of entry. The special
registration program has not been abolished.
